Medication Information:
Guanfacine (generic) - Tenex
(brand)
Manufacturer: A.H. Robins Co., Richmond, Va.
Classification: Antihypertensive (reduces blood
pressure)
Common Usage: Although it is approved only as a treatment
for high blood pressure, guanfacine also is used for patients with
attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADLID) who are unable to
tolerate any of the stimulant drugs such as methyiphenidate
(Ritalin) or the antidepressant bupropion (Weilbutrin).
Common
Major Side Effects: Sedation; headache; depression; dry
mouth; dizziness; confusion; and constipation. This drug should not
be stopped abruptly, because it may cause withdrawal effects such
as high blood pressure, anxiety and nausea, beginning one or two
days after the last dose. Care should be used in any activities
requiring mental alertness, such as driving or operating
machinery.
Interactions with Other Medications: Guanfacine may
increase the effects of other central nervous system depressants
such as alcohol. All health care providers should have a complete
list of all medications being taken.
Common
Dosages: The recommended initial dose of guanfacine when
given alone or with another drug is 1 mg daily to be taken at
bedtime. If after three to four weeks of therapy, the 1-mg dose is
not enough, a dose of 2 mg may be given. Doses higher than 2 mg may
increase sleepiness and other side effects significantly, without
adding any additional benefits.
Identification: Guanfacine is available in 1-mg, light
pink, diamond-shaped tablets embossed with a "1" and an "AJIR" on
one side and engraved "TENEX" on the other side. The 2-mg tablet is
yellow, diamond-shaped and engraved with "TENEX" on one side and
"2" and "AHR" on the other side.
Storage: Store below 86 degrees in a tightly closed, light-
and moisture-resistant container, out of direct sunlight. Do not
store in the bathroom or other warm, humid areas. Keep out of the
reach of children.
