From the Heart (part 3 of a 4
part series on Love and Romance)
How Men and
Women Love: The Differences
Research
reveals some interesting differences between the sexes in how love
is defined and expressed.
Men tend
to express their love through actions-- by working hard at
their jobs, bringing gifts, making love. Women rely more on words:
"I love you." "You're wonderful."
Men rate
loyalty higher as a component for love than women, who give higher
marks for emotional security.
Although men come to commitment much more slowly due to fear of
emotional dependency and the pain of a possible breakup, they tend
to fall in love sooner (and to love more passionately) than
women do. But researchers find no overall differences in men's and
women's passionate feelings.
Women tend
to fall out of love more readily than men; they are more likely
to compare their relationships to alternatives, or to end a
relationship that seems ill-fated; they also cope more effectively
with rejection.
Women are
usually more satisfied with their current love relationship than
men, but when the relationship is over, men tend to remember it
more fondly than women do.
Men are
more romantic than women. Studies on romanticism during
courtship show that men are more likely to agree, for example, with
the statement, "Love is a many-splendored thing."
